What is your job as a freelancer for Level Level?

I’m kind of a ‘jack of all trades’ when it comes to development. I work in different teams and on different projects. My work for Level Level is very varied and that makes it a lot of fun. Where my focus is mainly on back-end development (API links, technical extensions / further development to existing project) I also enjoy front-end work. I think both are great to do, although I like concepting, designing and developing different technical processes the most.

What did you do before this?

After my studies ‘Mechanical Engineering’ and ‘Communication and Media’ I immediately started working as an entrepreneur in the professional field. First as a beginning freelancer with my web agency 12HOOG. Later on 12HOOG fused with Rodesk. At Rodesk I was co-owner and technical lead responsible for a team of front- and back-end developers. Besides the fact that I also carried out a lot of development myself, I also set out the broad outlines and ambitions in the technical field. Despite the fact that I really enjoyed my work, I needed more freedom. Among other things, to travel. That’s why I decided to leave Rodesk and start working as a freelancer. I already knew Taeke and Level Level from the Rotterdam WordPress community. After a number of nice conversations, we started to collaborate.

What do you like so much about this field of work?

For me there is nothing more fun than solving a (at first) technically complex challenge and making it seem as simple as possible for an end user. I really get a kick out of this. It challenges me to think beyond the usual and that keeps me motivated. What working at Level Level makes so much fun for me is the challenge within projects. The technical bar (and the ambitions of clients) are always high. In my opinion, it’s the perfect proof that you can use WordPress to develop complex online issues and create projects with the highest standards

What makes you happy?

My passions are (besides work) travelling, adventure and being outdoors in nature. I love delicious food and preparing it with beautiful products. When talking about sports I like to go for a run. I am now training for my second half marathon. I’m also I climbing goat and I like to go climbing (as a sport). I like to do this in the climbing hall and boulder hall, but preferably in the mountains outside.

What do you do in your spare time?

At the moment I’m travelling with my girlfriend through Europe in a motorhome. I combine travelling with my work as a freelancer. It’s the best of both worlds I would say, I like it very much! At home in Rotterdam I’m a loyal stadium visitor to my club Feyenoord, where I never miss a game. In addition, I am chairman of the scouting group where I have been a member for 25 years. In that role I am a connector within the group and together with the board I set out the broad outlines for the future. When I need some rest I like to find a nice spot in nature and catch some fish with my fishing rod.
