Campaign website Cordaid: a WordPress Multisite with a multi purpose theme

The well known television show RTL Boulevard and StukTV ran a campaign between the 21st and 25th of November to raise awareness for our client Cordaid. We developed aWordPress Multisite with a multi purpose theme.

With the campaign ‘Stop onnodig sterven’ people were encouraged to support the work of Cordaid through a SMS message or donation.

The well known television show RTL Boulevard and StukTV ran a campaign between the 21st and 25th of November to raise awareness for our client Cordaid. The public was encouraged to send a text message with the word ‘LEEF’ to a special number and thereby contribute to better healthcare in Africa. Every text message is worth € 2,50 and all proceeds are donated to Cordaid. In Africa 6 million people die annually because of simple diseases like flu, diarrhea or even a simple cut. This are unnecessary deaths that could have easily been prevented or treated with proper healthcare.

Campaign template

The RTL campaign was a reason for Cordaid to develop a reusable and responsive template within their website. The template is slightly different from the corporate website and is specifically designed with the mobile user in mind. Our assumption that people who learned about the campaign on TV would grab their phone or tablet was proven right; website traffic around the campaign was 75% mobile traffic.

Device aware donation module

As the campaign focussed on donations through text messages we needed to develop a donation module that would adapt to the users device. Different phones and operating systems needed different triggers to open and create a predefined SMS message. Thereby, tablet and desktop devices usually can’t send SMS messages. The donation button acts accordingly and serves a way to donate without the text message.

SMS counter

The number of received text messages was a crucial metric for this campaign. We developed a light-weight mechanism to display near-realtime statistics. The mechanism was used for the online banners that were distributed, during the television shows to display the actual count in the studio and to provide the campaign website with the right statistics.

When promoting a campaign on national television and several advertising platforms we had to take millions of impressions into account. We needed a mechanism that was able to cache data but was also able to provide near-realtime statistics on the amount of received text messages. We solved this by hosting the sms-counter and banners on an additional server and by offloading most of the campaign driven traffic to Cloudflare.
