Yeah! Our team participated in an international design competition for the first time, and was awarded both a first prize and a finalist position! Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com, organized a design competition to honor the design community in the WordPress ecosystem. Participants could enter in a total of three categories: Best Site, Best Solution and Best Style. Finalists for the Automattic Design Awards were announced earlier this month, and the award ceremony took place last weekend during WordCamp US 2018 in Nashville.  Both finalists and winners received an award.  Our new English Level Level website (the one you are viewing right now) was one of the finalists in the category “Best Site” and won the first prize in the category ‘Best Style’.

Going over all the submissions, the expert jury was particularly looking for projects that were both Gutenberg ready (the new editor in WordPress 5) and fully accessible. Additionally, they were looking for work that demonstrated deep user empathy, developer-led design, outstanding UX, attention to the details, simplicity and breathtaking content.

“Wow! I’m super proud of this achievement. The whole team worked incredibly hard on this new website. With the new English website, we aimed to show that an accessible website does not equal a boring design. Judging from the jury report, we managed to succeed!”

Best Style

In the category ‘Best style’ the jury was looking for a clear understanding of user needs, a strong aesthetic design in combination with good working functionalities and breathtaking content. This category honors websites that are accessible, beautiful, fast and easy to use. Take a look at what the jury said about the new website:

“The new website for Netherlands WordPress specialists Level Level says everything we wanted to say by organizing these awards. Not only does the site embrace Gutenberg, the team showed outstanding dedication by presenting a series of fantastic behind-the-scenes videos explaining how it all works, thus sharing their experience with the wider community. The company specializes in accessibility, so it was no surprise to see consistent scores of 100/100 in our testing, on a site which proves that accessible doesn’t mean cold or bland.”

Best Site

In the category ‘Best Site’ the jury looked for sites that demonstrate deep user empathy, are well thought out, easy to use, and visually compelling. A quote from the jury:

“Definitely one of the best WordPress agency websites out there with a clear accessibility statement on it. The design of the site is clean and crisp and totally matches what you’d expect from a modern digital agency. We loved the videos that were sent in with the entry, showing how it all looked in the WP-admin.”
